The Teacher

Peter has over 25 years of teaching experience including eight years as Columbia College adjunct professor. His many and varied performance credits include playing salsa music with Heriberto Sanchez, touring as pianist for blues greats Junior Wells, Hubert Sumlin, and Eddie Shaw, singing in the chorus for the Philadelphia Orchestra, and playing piano for jazz artists Barrett Deems, and Orbert Davis.

Instruction

Peter provides a creative, structured, and rigorous approach to learning piano skills and jazz skills. Topics include a foundation in keyboard harmony, music theory, ear training, transcription, sight reading (notes and chord symbols), accompaniment (comping), styles and analysis, improvised line, and advanced concepts.

Students

Many of his students have been admitted to major music schools and institutions, including Berklee College of Music, Oberlin Conservatory, Northwestern University, University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, University of Michigan, New York University, and the United States Navy Band. A number of his current and former students are music professionals active in music education, classical music, theater music, new music, blues, jazz, gospel, rock, pop, and other styles. Peter also welcomes students who are approaching playing the piano more casually, simply for the love of music, and he prides himself on being flexible to student needs and interests.
